San Diego will on September 26-27 2017 host Bio-Based World Live Americas, bringing together the brands, chemical companies, retailers, financiers, entrepreneurs and researchers that make up our progressive and vibrant community. It is THE event, for your our community of readers and contributors.

Evidence of the opportunities around bio-based chemicals are clear: global production of chemicals have exceeded 60 million tonnes and the market is expected to increase by at least $12.2bn by 2021. Bio-based World News is here to help the industry shout about those increased opportunities and have invited along the standard of companies that regular attendees have grown to expect, including globally-recognised names such as IKEA, Total, Michelin, Procter & Gamble and Coca Cola.

Taking the baton from San Francisco, this year’s event at Sheraton Hotel’s Four Point venue in San Diego gives attendees the chance to join the whole value chain and become part of the conversation, with more than 10 hours of networking and learning from 200+ exhibitors and 50 speakers.

Making up the panel of bioeconomy experts will be a broad mix of speakers from sub-sectors as diverse as aquaculture and clothing, to beverages and packaging, and the conference will be split into two streams helping attendees make the best use of their time in San Diego:

  • Process Innovation & Technology, which aims to make the most of feedback resources, innovation and efficiency to compete on price and performance and also bringing together bio-based chemical production to commercial scale.
  • Sustainable Products, setting out the business drivers for uptake of sustainable products and materials, communicating the advantages of bio-based to consumers, as well as competing in an economy where the price of oil remains low.

Giving the audience a clear picture of his experience in the industry, Bill Radany of Verdezyne will get the ball rolling at 9.00am on day one using his 30+ years of experience in the biotechnology industry to give attendees a picture of its potential.

She highlighted the willingness among suppliers to use more sustainable packaging, saying: “Every year we see more and more sustainable packaging inquiries coming from brands and awareness of these materials is expanding.”

While at 2pm in the Process Innovation & Technology area, Darcy Prather of Kalion will explain how to introduce efficiencies and cost savings so businesses can compete on price and performance. Bio-Based World News caught up with the President of the industrial biotech company, which provides low-cost access to glucaric acid, in July this year when he spoke with passion on the reliance he places on positive industry collaboration “from diverse fields like coatings, adhesives, fibres and packaging” to help progress his business’s performance.

For those looking to learn more about the growing sustainable textile sector, Tom Chappell will present at 11.30 on Day Two to demystify who it is that actually buys it and what can be done to make them more ethical. Chappell stressed last year when he took part in Bio-Based World’s 5 minutes with…that it wasn’t just about the use of harmful chemicals that make the textiles industry ”the second biggest polluter on the planet” more ethical, but also by encouraging the entire supply chain pay fairer wages.

With more than just speakers, Bio-Based Live will as ever include roundtables, workshops, awards and panel discussions to really open up the floor and encourage debate. Day Two’s afternoon panel will attempt to get to the bottom of how to bring products to commercial scale, and we look forward to welcoming Jo Anne Shatkin, President of Vireo Advisors, Jeff Brown, Founder and CEO of Novvi, Dr. Kimberly Samaha, Chief Expansion Officer of Synthesis Venture Fund Partners and David Babson, Technology Manager of Bio-energy Technologies Office, US Department of Energy.

We look forward to seeing you all in San Diego for this year’s show, which with the help of the expert speakers, attendees, workshops and roundtables will help the bioeconomy continue to thrive.
