Bio-based pioneers Method and Ecover acquired by multinational SC Johnson.

Bio-based pioneers Method and Ecover acquired by multinational SC Johnson.Method and Ecover, two of the world’s most long standing and successful bio-based brands, with a wide array of ecologically sound cleaning products has been acquired by SC Johnson, the multinational whose brand stable includes Pledge, Mr. Muscle and Kiwi shoe polish. As a private company, SC Johnson has not had to disclose the details of the deal, and the transaction remains subject to regulatory approvals in the U.S., U.K. and Germany.

In 2012 Belgium based Ecover bought Method Products, a San Francisco, United States headquartered manufacturer of biodegradable natural cleaning supplies with a focus on minimalist product design, to assist its entry of the North American market. The new group became the world’s largest green cleaning products company by sales and clearly caught the eye the SC Johnson board.

SC Johnson is one of the world’s leading manufacturers of household cleaning products and products for air care, home storage, shoe care, personal care and pest control, as well as professional products.  In 2001, after what they describe as a “decade of voluntarily, and often unilaterally, removing from our products chemicals that didn’t meet our standards” SC Johnson launched the ‘Greenlist’ a project to go “beyond taking out ‘bad’ ingredients and instead focus on choosing ‘better’ options and continuously improving formulas based on information about ingredients’ impact on the environment and human health.

“Method and Ecover have a strong tradition of innovation and delivering on consumers’ needs. They are a great complement to SC Johnson’s trusted line-up of iconic brands,” said Fisk Johnson, Chairman and CEO of SC Johnson.

This purchase of Ecover and Method by SC Johnson, is further proof of the growing economic potential of bio-based products and their emergence from a niche audience in mainstream shopping baskets. For Ecover and Method it offers the opportunity to reach new markets and take advantages of the huge resources that SC Johnson provide.

Whilst for the multinational it enables them to reach a different customer base and to be able boost their standing in the sustainable and bio-based space. The team at Bio-Based World News will watch closely developments at Ecover and Method!
