Drinks giant PepsiCo, one of the world’s largest users of food-grade recycled PET, is planning to use 25% of recycled content for its plastic packaging by 2025 as part of its sustainable plastics vision. The company will work collaboratively with suppliers and partners to increase consumer awareness, foster cross-industry and public-private partnerships, as well as advocate for improved recycling infrastructure and regulatory reform.
Plastic waste has been in the media spotlight in recent months and PepsiCo’s pledge comes at a time when businesses are under pressure to cut down on their use of the material.
As part of its commitments, the drinks giant has a specific goal to use 33% recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET) content in beverage bottles by 2025.
“PepsiCo's sustainable plastics vision is to build a PepsiCo (@PepsiCo) where plastics need never become waste," PepsiCo vice-chairman and chief scientific officer Mehmood Khan said. "We intend to achieve that vision by reducing, recycling and reusing, and reinventing our plastic packaging and leading global change through partnerships.”
He added: “PepsiCo is one of the world’s largest users of food-grade recycled PET. To further boost recycled content across all plastic packaging and drive progress towards a circular economy for plastics, it is vital to dramatically increase global waste collection and recycling rates through investment in recycling infrastructure and technology.”
The decision complements PepsiCo’s commitment to its 2025 Agenda. In its agenda, the company aims to make 100% of its packaging recyclable, compostable or biodegradable, while increasing the use of recycled materials, reducing the carbon impact of its packaging, as well as increasing recycling rates by working in collaboration with the PepsiCo Foundation - the philanthropic arm of PepsiCo.
Earlier this month, the beverage maker signed a multi-year supply agreement with US sustainable plastics technology company Loop Industries (@loopindustries) to incorporate Loop PET plastic, which is 100% recycled material, into its product packaging by mid-2020.
Speaking about the agreement, Khan said: “Loop's technology enables PepsiCo to be a leading force in ensuring plastic packaging need never become waste. This partnership represents a step-change that will empower PepsiCo in our drive towards creating a circular economy for plastics."
In September, PepsiCo also announced plans to join the Global Plastic Action Partnership (GPAP) to enable businesses, communities and governments to redesign their waste management systems to create a circular model.
The news of PepsiCo’s goals comes as it joined big names such as Unilever (@Unilever), H&M (@hm) and Coca-Cola (@CocaCola) on Monday to sign up to a major campaign led by yachtswoman Ellen MacArthur to tackle plastic pollution at source.
The campaign is called the new plastics economy global commitment.
The signatories, which also include the governments of the UK, France and Scotland, pledged to eliminate problematic or unnecessary plastic packaging and move from single-use to reuseable packaging instead. Other targets include innovations to ensure 100%. of plastic packaging can be easily and safely reused, recycled or composted by 2025 and significantly increasing the amount of plastic that is reused or recycled in packaging or products.
UN Environment Programme head Erik Solheim called the global commitment "the most ambitious set of targets we have seen yet in the fight to beat plastics pollution."
