Elon Musk is a regular in the headlines and recently for not always the most positive of reasons. His myriad of projects and products seem to increase by the week, and needless controversies, such as the furore around the Thai cave rescue seem to cloud and confuse his decision making. But there was a little bit of positive news last week, when Tesla , his automotive company, sold out of one of their spin-off products in just twenty four hours. The product was a very limited edition (200) of $1,500 surfboards featuring a mix of the same high-quality matte and gloss finishes used on all their cars. The deck is reinforced with light-weight ‘Black Dart’ carbon fiber. And why are we featuring this today? As it also features a bio-based epoxy resin. Epoxy resin is a relatively new trend in the surfboard industry as traditionally they have been treated with polyester resin; however, Tesla and other manufacturers are now turning to a plant based epoxy for added strength and durability.
Produced in in collaboration with Lost Surfboards and Matt “Mayhem” Biolos, this surfboard comes in at 6’8″ by 20.5″ by 2 7/8″, and the specification is such that to fit perfectly inside or outside their Model S, X and 3 electric cars. The limited edition run sold out in about a day, though if you are still interested, head over to eBay where one can be bought for $5000.
Founded in 2003 by a group of engineers who wanted to prove that people didn’t need to compromise on performance, Tesla ( @Tesla ) want electric vehicles to be “better, quicker and more fun to drive” than petrol cars. A sustainable energy ecosystem is also the goal, and so Tesla also manufactures a unique set of energy solutions, Powerwall, Powerpack and Solar Roof, that enabled homeowners, businesses, and utilities to manage renewable energy generation, storage, and consumption.
With such lofty aims, we hope that bio-based epoxy’s are only the beginning of Elon Musk and Tesla’s work with bio-based materials.
