Total Corbion PLA is helping safeguard the future of sustainable sugarcane for use in PLA (Poly Lactic Acid) bioplastics, using Bonsucro-accreditated sugarcane in its products and investing millions of dollars in newcomer Thailand’s growing industry.

A major producer of PLA bioplastics, Total Corbion PLA will as part of its commitment to support “the principles of sustainable agriculture” make Bonsucro-certified sugarcane available for commercial order. The organisation Bonsucro is to sugarcane production what Fairtrade is to coffee, working to build thriving, sustainable producer communities and resilient, assured supply chains. Other countries that are members of Bonsucro include Brazil, El Salvador, India and Italy.

Total Corbion PLA, a joint venture between Total and Corbion set up to make use of the biodegradable material, announced in the first quarter of the 2017 that it would increase its presence in Thailand with an investment of $100m that includes the construction of a facility in 2018 100 miles from Bangkok in Rayong. The south-east Asian country is relatively new to Bonsucro, with its first official producer aligning itself with the organisation in July 2016.

“With the Bonsucro certification, we now offer our customers the guarantee that the biomass used to produce PLA was grown supporting the principles of sustainable agriculture”.

Total Corbion PLA’s position on feedstock sourcing for bioplastics is outlined in its whitepaper, published together with Corbion, which also includes the company stance on feedstock selection, land use, feedstock efficiency and food security.
